Rituals Matter
Over and over again, books about writing instruct us to maintain continuity. “Write everyday” is the most often quoted charge.
I just learned another valuable lesson about continuity and rituals. I honestly thought I’d learned this one, but stress clouded my mind and made me resume a bad old habit.
In my former life as a smart but stupid woman, I deprived myself of many things when I faced a deadline. I wouldn’t sleep, or take care of my health. Then I’d get sick, really sick. I’d spend hour after hour at my desk without a break. Then my hands and wrists would ache.
This afternoon, I canceled a standing date I have with a girlfriend of mine. I told her (and myself) that it was in the name of efficiency, but I could feel myself starting to miss our time. Then I projected forward in my week and could see my own sour face, exhausted and depleted.
So I sent and email and then called my friend to ask for our date back.
After every one of our afternoons, I sit at the computer energized and connected to the work. I feel clear-headed and empowered.
What’s the lesson? Don’t jettison the rituals that sustain you in the midst of writing. PRESERVE THE CONTINUITY OF PLEASURE. Be careful what you deny yourself in the name of efficiency. Sometimes, many times, continuity is a writer’s best friend.
